LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The holiday bills are coming in and you're probably thinking that you could use some extra money.

Secret shopper jobs are popping up everywhere and it may sound like an ideal way to start the year, but like with everything, they come with warnings.

One woman received an urgent mailing in her mailbox and inside was a letter with Walmart's logo saying she had been chosen to be a secret shopper.

The job also came with a big check. The letter told her to deposit the check and then buy Walmart gift cards to test the store's cashiers.

The new trend is full of red flags, and internet security workers are saying to be suspicious of any job that sends you a check before you even start the job and asks you to spend some of it.

The check will likely bounce, and you could lose thousands of dollars of your own money.

If you're wanting to mystery shop, check with the Mystery Shopping Providers Association to be sure the job is real.
