Nationwide, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates $890 billion worth of purchases will be returned in 2024, accounting for about 17% of annual sales. However, return policies vary by retailer, and understanding the rules can save time and money.

  • Amazon: Most items purchased between November 1 and December 31 can be returned through January 31. Apple brand products purchased between November 1 and December 31 can be returned through January 15.
  • Walmart: Most items purchased from October 1 through December 31 can be returned until January 31.  
  • Target: The holiday return window closes on January 24.

Consumer Reports Tips to Avoid Return Hassles:

  1. Keep original packaging: Some retailers charge a repackaging fee, often 15% of the purchase price, particularly for electronics.
  2. Save gift receipts: Without a receipt, you may only receive store credit instead of a refund.
  3. Bring ID: Many stores require identification to prevent fraud.
  4. Check online return options: Returning items in-store may save you shipping fees.
