LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Drivers in Indiana will soon need to slow down or pay up as automatic fines roll out in construction zones statewide.
Starting April 1, the state’s Safe Zones program will activate speed enforcement devices at four work zones — the maximum allowed under state law.
The newest location covers a stretch of Interstate 74 in Shelby and Decatur counties, joining three other sites operating at the same time.
"It’s the season where these construction zones will continue, but they’re also going to be popping up in areas where you don’t expect," said Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine. "So always be prepared for that."
State officials say the program is already making a difference, with a 2025 report from the Indiana Department of Transportation showing a 71% drop in excessive speeding at monitored sites.
Drivers will only receive violations when workers are present, a measure aimed at protecting crews without penalizing drivers unnecessarily.
With more orange barrels set to line roadways in the coming months, officials say slowing down could save lives — and money.
