RecycWELL initiative ribbon cutting 8-28-24

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky is celebrating the launch of its first dedicated glass recycling program.

Leaders helped cut the ribbon on the new RecycWELL initiative, the first-of-its-kind in Kentucky, Wednesday morning in west Louisville.

The recycled glass will be taken to the OI Glass facility in Bowling Green, and will be made into new containers for Kentucky's distilled spirits industry.

"Bourbon is our country's native spirit, and during a time where our economy is on fire in so many different ways, this industry continues to play a unique roll both in driving our economy and introducing our state around the world," Gov. Andy Beshear said.

The $350,000 initiative was created by Workwell Industries, a west Louisville nonprofit for those facing employment barriers.

The program is expected to create up to 10 permanent full-time jobs.
