LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The day after Christmas can be filled with snacks, naps, and enjoying time with family. But it also marks the start of holiday return season.
Just hours after Christmas on the calendar was officially over, people wasted no time hitting the stores to hunt for post-holiday deals, make returns or spend gift cards.
Tuesday morning, it didn't take long for the line to grow at Quest Outdoors.
"Sometimes picking up things we forgot at Christmas to finish out things or returns, today we are returning some things that are a little too small or a little too big," said shopper Megan Mayer.
Shopping on the day after Christmas has become a tradition for some, including Mayer and her family.
"The city is home to me and my family and I grew up here, was raised here, so anywhere that I can support local businesses I am all for it," she said.
It's a profitable time for many businesses, including local retailers.
"It's been a great Christmas, it's been great," said Michelle King, co-owner of Quest Outdoors. "Everybody has been wonderful."
The National Retail Federation said about $966 billion will be spent over the holidays this year, up by more than 3% from last year.
"I always love to check out the after-holiday specials, too," said Jill Spencer. "Those are where the deals are at, and to take your gift card and to get something for school is wonderful."
Spencer and her family stopped by the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass in Simpsonville on Tuesday, joining those looking for the best deals. But it wasn't just the adults doing the searching.
"It's pretty fun to do because you got these gift cards and you probably have Christmas money that you can spend," said Julia Eskridge, who wanted to get some "Jibbitz" for the Crocs she got for Christmas.
Despite the expected rush of traffic and crowds, Tuesday morning wasn't as overwhelming as shoppers thought it would be.
"I expected there to be a lot more traffic out here, especially out by the malls in St. Matthews, and it is not, but tons of people in the store still," said Mayer.
However, Tuesday evening the parking lot at Mall St. Matthews was full with several cars driving around looking for any open spots.
It's expected nearly $30 billion in gift cards were given out this holiday season. Many stores are also offering extended hours into the new year.
