LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville nonprofit celebrated 25 years of helping cats around the community.
Alley Cat Advocates has spayed or neutered more than 70,000 stray, free-roaming cats since it was founded 25 years ago. The nonprofit opened a state-of-the-art cat complex at 3524 Newburg Road on the Louisville Metro Animal Services campus in 2020.
Alley Cat Advocates founder Karen Little said the stray cat population has declined since the organization was created.
"We've done more than 70,000 cats since we started, so that is quite a number in and of itself," Little said. "We currently are receiving about 8,000 calls a year for assistance and the cats in number that we spay or neutering are between 150 and 160 a week."
Alley Cat Advocates provides services including a spay/neuter clinic, a medical rehabilitation space and special needs/hospice foster rooms.
If any of the stray cats are sick or injured, the cats will be helped by Louisville Metro Animal Services, which is free for Jefferson County residents.Â
