LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Nearly New Shop is closing its longtime Louisville thrift store in the Mid City Mall.
A news release from the National Council of Jewish Women, Louisville Section, on Tuesday said the resale shop will close Sept. 30, 2025.
The NCJW Louisville Section executive director Sarah Harlan told WDRB that the group decided to close for two reasons: the "challenges of the resale market" right now and the future plans for Mid City Mall. There are no plans to reopen elsewhere.
The store was on a month-to-month lease, so it is not being forced out. Decision to close was up to the local group, according to Harlan.
A 50 percent off closing sale is underway, and the organization said it will work with other agencies to repurpose unsold merchandise to benefit the community.
The Nearly New Shop opened in 1956 on Market Street in downtown Louisville as a source of fundraising for the organization. It moved to the Mid City Mall in 1988.
"For the last 69 years, community members have donated clothing, accessories, home furnishing and furniture to the Shop, the proceeds of which were used to pay for advocacy projects and programs run by the NCJW," the release said.
Even with the planned closing, the volunteer organization said it will continue to advocate for social justice issues on behalf of women, children and families.
The Louisville Section was founded in 1895. Over the past 130 years, the NCJW said it has sponsored the creation of organizations and programs including Kentucky Youth Advocates, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Court Watch to monitor the cases of domestic violence victims, Jefferson Family Recovery Court and other initiatives. It has also led campaigns to oppose amendments that it believed would "restrict access to abortion and hinder reproductive autonomy and violate the separation of religion and state."
