LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Old Forester released its 150th anniversary Brown Forman decanter Thursday, which quickly sold out.

Filled with 12-and-a-half-year-old bourbon, the company said the decanter that honors the brand's 150th anniversary is the rarest bottle it's ever produced.

A total of 500 bottles were originally crafted to hold bourbon from six specially selected barrels in 2008 for members of the Brown family. Of those, 150 were set aside for special tastings. The bourbon was bottled in the special decanter 150 months later (12.5 years) in 2020.

The 2020 pandemic shut down the plans for the 150 bottles set aside, so the brand released them to the public on Thursday.

The decanter is presented in a custom wooden handmade box made from wood recovered from the fire at Old Forester on Whiskey Row in 2015. The fire nearly destroyed the Whiskey Row block.

People who bought the rare bottle must pick it up on December 5 -- the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition as part of an after-hours event. The bottle purchase includes a private VIP tour of the Old Forester distillery, along with cocktails and appetizers with members of the Brown family.

A special year-long exhibit, which opens this month at the Frazier Museum, tells the story of those mid-century decanters.

The decanters priced at $2,500 were quickly snatched up almost as soon as the online sale started on Nov. 16.
