LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A hospital in south Louisville opened a new medical behavioral unit.

UofL Health  Mary & Elizabeth Hospital completed a $6.6 million renovation to increase access to inpatient medical behavioral health services, according to a news release Monday. The new unit will offer a wide range of services for treating patients who have psychiatric disorders and medical disorders. People with diagnosis like bipolar disorder, psychosis, depression and schizophrenia will be able to receive treatment at the new unit.

The unit is 16,688 square feet and offers patients two family visitation rooms, a large area for patients to interact during the day, two therapy rooms and a separate space for quiet activities and relaxation. The unit has 33 beds in a combination of private and semi-private rooms.

"Jefferson County, in particularly the South Louisville area, faces ongoing challenges with mental health, including a lack of community-based and hospital-based service," Melisa Adkins, CEO of UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, said in a news release. "Meeting those needs in a private and discreet setting is critically important to us. With the opening of this new 33-bed unit, we are giving patients both the medical and mental health care they need to improve the state of their lives and overall wellbeing."

According to a news release, the unit will treat adult and geriatric patients. Services will include acute crisis stabilization, group/individual therapy, acute substance abuse detoxification, behavior management, medical management, and treatment of acute psychiatric symptoms.

"We're going to be able to provide services that very few places in Kentucky provide," said Whitney Clark, psychiatric nurse practitioner.
