CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) — Traffic is already a headache along Veteran’s Parkway in Clarksville — and it’s about to get worse.

Crews were putting finishing touches on the new Wawa gas station Wednesday as staff members trained inside. The store, which officially opens next Thursday, will be the first Wawa in the Clarksville area and just the third in Indiana.

Known for its coffee, sandwiches and convenience, Wawa has built a devoted following wherever it expands. But in Clarksville, residents and workers are bracing for a new wave of congestion.

ā€œI’m actually on lunch — I wanted to go to the Wawa, but I saw we have to wait for the grand opening,ā€ said Decoyen Parks who lives in Clarksville. ā€œBut I think once it opens, it will be pretty busy around here.ā€

Asked if that meant more traffic, he said, ā€œOh yes, sir, most definitely.ā€

The area around the store has long been a traffic trouble spot, especially for delivery drivers and commuters.

ā€œIt’s horrible,ā€ said Wesley Jeffrey - a driver who regularly navigates the road in a semi. ā€œSometimes it takes 30 minutes just to get to the interstate.ā€

Still, some nearby businesses are hopeful the Wawa will bring increased visibility — and possibly more customers.

ā€œIt’s probably definitely going to bring more business,ā€ said Danielle, who works across from the Wawa. ā€œPeople going to the Wawa might see us. But people are also going to want to bypass other roads, so I’m not really sure.ā€

One thing is certain: While many welcome Wawa’s arrival, they’re also preparing for gridlock.

ā€œWe’re excited about the Wawa,ā€ Danielle said. ā€œBut we are definitely not excited about the traffic.ā€

The Wawa is set to open its doors May 30 at 8 a.m.

According to a news release, the new store will employ around 35 associates.Ā
