LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The holidays can be a vulnerable time for domestic violence victims and survivors.
Because families are together for a long period of time, it can create stressors and triggers, according to the Center for Women and Families in Louisville.
There are warning signs people can look for.
"Say you're going out Christmas shopping or holiday shopping and the person you're with is having to check in a lot with their partner, the abuser's very controlling," said Elizabeth Martin with Center for Women and Families.
Last year, the center received 83,144 crisis calls and sheltered 290 adults and 167 children. The nonprofit also responded to 770 hospital runs, provided legal response-court advocacy 556 times and more than 1,250 therapeutic sessions.
