LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville is changing the traditional date the city kicks off the holidays.
Louisville Metro Special Events announced on social media that the 2023 Light up Louisville will be Saturday, Dec. 2. That's a week later than normal.
In years past, the event has always been on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Mayor Craig Greenberg's press secretary, Kevin Trager, said in a statement that moving the event means city employees can have the holiday off.
"Light Up Louisville is a huge team effort, with dozens of employees from Public Works, Facilities, LMPD, and the Mayor’s Office working together, including setting up the event the day before it happens. Moving the event to the following weekend allows our employees to enjoy Thanksgiving Day with their families. We encourage Louisvillians to come downtown on December 2nd to celebrate this wonderful tradition."
People are invited to come downtown from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the festivities, including the arrival of Santa Claus and the lighting of the city tree.
More details on Light Up Louisville are expected to be released soon.
