LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After years without a place to swim, families in west Louisville will soon have a new pool to enjoy.

The city is putting the finishing touches on renovations at Algonquin Pool, which is set to open to the public on Memorial Day weekend. It will be the first new public pool to open in the city's west end in decades.

"I've been going here for a little over 15 years," said JaZlyn Talon, who lives near Algonquin Park and often brings her three children there. "They like to go out. They like to have fun. They like to swim, which is the No. 1 thing we're trying to get to."

The previous pool at the park closed abruptly in 2023 due to disrepair. Watching the pieces come together for the new pool, Talon said she remembers how different the facility looked before.

"I knew what it was before they fixed it up — just a pool with a building," she said.

The new pool will feature far more. The upgraded facility will include a zero-depth entry ramp, water slides, a lily pad bridge and a vortex pool — all part of a $9 million project to renovate both the Algonquin and Camp Taylor pools.

"We just know that this is going to be such a good resource for the Algonquin neighborhood to enjoy," said Katey Cook, a spokesperson for Louisville Parks and Recreation.

While Algonquin Pool is set to reopen with two other public pools — Sun Valley and Fairdale — Camp Taylor's pool opening is delayed. It was originally set to open along with the rest, but bad weather forced construction delays.

"We're really looking forward to it opening next year," Cook said. "It's going to give us something to look forward to."

All three public pools will open beginning Saturday, May 24.
