LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A public pool in Louisville won't reopen this summer due to construction delays, the city announced Tuesday.
Camp Taylor swimming pool was expected to reopen this summer after being closed for years. While the pool was originally targeted to reopen spring 2025, it was pushed back due to winter weather and heavy rain this spring.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said the construction schedule is behind, and the project won't be finished in time for this summer. The pool is now not expected to reopen until 2026.
"I know this is not the news that anyone wanted to hear right before our summer and swim season gets underway," Greenberg said.
Greenberg said the city will work on additional improvements for the park this summer, including a new basketball court and benches, along with a new limestone block fence.
"We'll be taking some of the funding for pool security and operations this summer and put it toward summer activity vouchers for families who live near the park," Greenberg said. "We wanted to let families know they have not been forgotten."
Louisville Metro Councilwoman Josie Raymond said Greenberg pledged additional funding for summer activities, but families have every right to be frustrated.
"I was incredibly disappointed to learn that the Camp Taylor pool won't be opening this summer," Raymond said in a statement. "I am thankful, however, that the Mayor's administration has stepped up and committed to two major improvement projects including an updated basketball court with benches and limestone fence around Camp Taylor Memorial Park. With additional funds from the District 10 office, the park will be revitalized and ready to match the quality of the pool when it opens."
Once complete, the new Camp Taylor pool is expected to feature lap lanes, a play structure and a water slide.
Algonquin Park's new swimming pool is scheduled to open May 24. The pool will include slides, lap lanes and a climbing wall.
