LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Soon, Louisville residents who want to go mountain biking won't have to go to the mountains to do so.
Mayor Craig Greenberg announced plans for the Highland Park Bike Park and revealed first concept renderings of the project during his weekly news briefing Tuesday morning.
The plans call for the park to be built under the Watterson Expressway, on Park Boulevard near Crittenden Drive at Highland Park.
Greenberg said the area was recently covered in trash and was considered dangerous, and that this plan will make the area safer. In a Facebook post, he said the goal is to work with community partners "to clean up and lift up areas of our city that have been neglected for too long."
The park will serve as a mountain bike skills park, so plans also call for four different zones, serving everyone from beginners to advance mountain bikers.
"This is how people come together, make new friends and develop their hobby," Derek Fetco, with the Kentucky Mountain Bike Association, said. "They're also an excellent way for families to spend time together."
Greenberg said the park will also eventually host mountain biking events, which can draw in people from other cities.
The concept is expected to be finalized this spring. It's estimated the park will take about a year to complete. You can follow along with the progress by following the Highland Park Bike Park on Facebook, here.
The public gave feedback on the park proposal, shared ideas, and asked questions during a meeting Tuesday evening at the Beechmont Community Center on West Wellington Avenue.
