CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- When you're driving down 65 South in Clarksville, it's hard not to look past US 31 and think, "What's all of that?" Vacationers from all over stop to see one unique collection. Even locals find themselves still being drawn in after almost 40 years.
"Do I like that one or this one?" asked one customer.
"The Concrete Lady" is one of the biggest concrete statue shops in the country. It's a place where the selection is endless. They have dogs of every breed, eagles, policemen, firemen and much more.Â
The strange is well represented too.Â
"I never thought Big Foot would've sold like it does, but we can't keep him," co-owner, Tony Woods explained.
What hasn't been made has been requested.Â
"A guy wanted a life-size bear with him on the back of it," Tony said with a chuckle.
People dig it. A lot of folks, besides "The Concrete Lady" herself. Ironically, Peggy Woods says she actually doesn't understand why customers love a lot of what she makes.Â
"I have a dog. A (dog) statue, I'm not interested in doing that,"Â Peggy said.
Don't get her wrong, she's not going to let her opinion get in the way of selling her stone creations. What started as her hobby has turned into a big business.Â
"I needed something to do at home because my husband didn't want me to work," she said.
It's all made 25 minutes away from the Clarksville location, underground, near the Concrete Lady's home in Otisco. Members of the Woods family, along with some employees make the molds, sculpt and pour concrete. Then, it's time for painting.
The dozens of statues available for sale take at least three months to produce. That creates a hefty work week, every week.
"Everything is really hectic. We start at 8 (a.m.). There are people here sometimes until 7 (p.m.)," Peggy said.
The hard work is paying off. More importantly for Peggy, the business leaves a concrete path of success for her kids and grandchildren.
"It means a lot that I can pass this on," Peggy said.
Clearly, the bond the family has is stronger than any statue they could build.
