LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- In the hours after the Louisville area experienced its third snowfall in two weeks, crews were already gearing up for another round.

With more winter weather in the forecast this weekend, crews were out in full force Friday clearing the roads after overnight snow and repeating the process of prepping them for more.

"We started with around 32,000 tons of salt. We've used, through the course of the other snow events, used around 7,000 of those tons," Wes Sydnor, executive director of Louisville Metro Public Works, said.

Residents across the region woke up to several inches of snow Friday morning, with many school districts closed or on remote learning for the day.

This weekend, crews don't just have snow to worry about. Dangerously cold temperatures are also forecasted.

Across the area, salt was reloaded once again to cover the roads on both sides of the Ohio River.

While crews prepare, some are enjoying the snow during the holiday season.

"Honestly, I kind of like it," said Megan Zuranski. "I feel like all the past years it's been a bit gray and slushy, so I like it."

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said trucks started brining roads around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday ahead of the winter storm that rolled through the area Thursday night into Friday morning. During the weather event, Greenberg said there were 50 trucks working overnight.

"I think the road conditions that you're seeing right now is the result of some changes that we've made over the past several months," the mayor said. "That is because of the brining that started much earlier than when the weather came in."

Greenberg said the city added more money to the city's mid-year budget adjustment to improve the quality of plow blades and to get more equipment for brining roads.

"You will continue to see trucks out on the road, continuing to treat the road as deemed necessary whether it's additional salt or what have you," he said.

With more snow in the forecast for Saturday and frigid temperatures expected, crews are continuing to brine and clear the roads.

"We're working around the clock to make sure that this event is handled," Sydnor said.
