Accused Kroger killer faces victims' family members in court

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- For the first time since two people were gunned down at a Jeffersontown Kroger, their accused killer faced the victims' families in court.

Gregory Bush, 51, is accused of shooting and killing 69-year-old Maurice Stallard and 67-year-old Vickie Jones at the Stony Brook Kroger in Jeffersontown on Oct. 24. Police say Bush shot Stallard inside the store, then went outside and shot Jones. Both died at the scene.

Friday's court appearance was over in minutes, but the courtroom was packed with emotional family members. Several Metro Corrections officers and sheriff's deputies were also on hand and ready.

One person shouted a profanity at Bush as soon as he entered, setting the tone for the rest of the proceedings.

Bush entered a not guilty plea. Angie Elleman, who was appointed as Bush's public defender, addressed family members in court.

“We would like to extend our condolences to the families of Mr. Stallard and Ms. Jones," Elleman said.

"We understand that this entire community has suffered a great loss. It’s in times of tragedy and upheaval that our Constitution and our laws can be most tested. Mr. Bush of course had the full protection of the Constitution with right to due process and a fair trial."

Bush is facing multiple charges including murder, attempted murder and wanton endangerment.

He is due back in court for his pretrial conference in January. Until then he will remain in custody on a $5 million cash bond.
