LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Butler High School has postponed its Homecoming dance and cancelled a pep rally after students and staff were hit with pepper spray during a fight at the school Wednesday.

In a letter to parents, Butler principal William Allen said it happened when  "few students" started fighting during the lunch period. Officials said a student released pepper spray on a crowd gathered during the incident.

First responders said the victims had "significant irritation in their eyes and throats."

The school is investigating to determine which student used the pepper spray. JCPS officials said everyone involved will be disciplined.

JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said pep rallies will be held in the future, and that students are still allowed to wear Spirit Wear attire for the rest of the week.
