CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Clarksville Police arrested a man for allegedly using a screwdriver in an attempted armed robbery at a local hotel before using a ride sharing service to make a getaway.

Clarksville Police Detective Justice Kraft said the attempted robbery happened at Candlewood Suites at 1419 Bales Lane last week on Nov. 21. Police said during the attempted armed robbery, Shawn Ogden allegedly tried to stab an employee with a screwdriver but employees fought him off.

"He was in the lobby for a little while and waited for some employees to clear out," Kraft said. "He jumped the counter. He was caught, an altercation ensued between him and some employees, in which one of them was bit."

The employee who was bitten — and asked to remain anonymous — noticed Ogden inside the hotel on the security camera.

"We saw a gentleman walking back and forth looking down the hallways, looking this way and that way," the employee said. "We saw him jump over the counter."

The employee said Ogden was searching around to try to find the cash box behind the desk. When the employee saw Ogden jump over the counter on surveillance camera, he rushed to the lobby. That's when a physical altercation between the employee and Ogden happened, as the employee tried to stop him.

Police said Ogden bit the employee, who was wearing a long sleeve jacket, breaking skin on the arm.

"He tried to bite onto me like a pit bull and wouldn't let go," the employee said.

The employee still has teeth marks on his arm.

Police said the man attacked the employee with a screwdriver, but the employee was alerted by a coworker.

"She said 'watch it he's got a screwdriver' and he tried to stab me on the side and I moved, it missed me by a quarter-inch," the employee said. "She's my real hero. If she hadn't said watch the screwdriver, he would have gotten me in my side."

Hotel employees temporarily kept Ogden in a chair to wait for police, but fearing for their safety, let him walk out of the hotel.

Kraft said Ogden fled the hotel and took advantage of an unsuspecting bystander.

"He came upon one of our local businesses, a good Samaritan who was working at that business ordered an Uber for him," Kraft said.

Kraft said the good Samaritan called police after Ogden got into the vehicle. Police used the Uber app thanks to the cooperative good Samaritan, which helped police locate Ogden quicker.

"He was a lot easier to locate," Kraft said. "Because we had (the good Samaritan) as a resource, things happened much quicker and we were able to apprehend that suspect a lot quicker."

Police caught up to the Uber ride on U.S. 31 near Jeffersonville. Since it was a felony stop, Kraft said police called for occupants of the vehicle to get out of the car.

"The Uber driver was unaware of what was going on, he was taking a fare just like anyone else would," Kraft said. "There were no issues from the Uber driver, he stopped when officers apprehended the suspect. He was none the wiser from what had happened before."

The employee at the hotel who spoke to WDRB News said he heard there had been other attempted robberies at hotels around southern Indiana.

"Once his arrest was made public, other officers from different agencies reached out to us inquiring about him," Kraft said.

According to police, officers recovered a stolen vehicle Ogden had driven to the hotel.

Ogden was booked in Clark County Detention Center. He is facing several charges.

Jason Bisinber, a Clarksville resident, said it's one of the more crazier stories he's heard recently.

"I don't see why he would try to do that, he would have got caught anyway," Bisinber said. "That was just the wrong move."
