LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man could spend half a century behind bars for multiple felony charges, including murder.
A jury recommended Lorenzo Tunstull be given 50 years for his crimes, according to the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
According to court documents, the jury found Tunstull guilty of stalking his victims for over an hour on March 18, 2022, following them to multiple locations before opening fire as they were walking into their home.
The jury recommended 40 years for his murder charges, five years each for his two wanton endangerment charges, and 10 years for his charge of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The recommendation was for the murder and wanton endangerment charges to run consecutively, with the fourth charge to run concurrently for a total of 50 years.
"Gun violence connected to these heinous crimes deserve serious penalties, and the jury made their agreement in that clear with their findings," Commonwealth's Attorney Gerina Whethers said in a news release on Monday.
Louisville Metro Police said at the time that the shooting happened just after 9:45 a.m. on Woodmore Avenue, which is near the intersection of Palatka Road and Southside Drive.
Ricky Harris, 31, died at the scene after police said he put himself between Tunstull and his 4-year-old son, sacrificing himself for his child.
Harris' girlfriend, and the mother of his children, was also trying to get out of the car and into the house. Her cellphone was shot out of her hand.
Tunstull was arrested in April 2022, a little over a month after the shooting.
According to his arrest citation, police were able to identify Tunstull as the suspect from — among other things — surveillance video showing him exiting a vehicle matching the description as that belonging to the suspect within an hour of the murder. Police said his clothing matched that of the clothing worn by the suspect.
When confronted, police said Tunstull admitted to being the man seen exiting the vehicle.
A formal sentencing hearing was scheduled for Jan. 7, 2025. Tunstull is not eligible for probation.
