LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- On Saturday, April 27, 53-year-old Lorrie Hayden was murdered. According to her family, she was shot in the head by an old boyfriend.

Wednesday, the suspect fatally shot himself when police showed up at his house.

For Hayden's family, justice has not been served because they wanted him arrested and charged.

Hayden was a nurse, who loved the outdoors.

“I have learned you can lose everything very quickly," her only child, Zachary Hayden, said Thursday.

Lorrie Hayden's mother, Ellen Mahoney, said she'll never be the same again. Her only daughter, Mahoney knew the relationship Lorrie was in was a violent one.

“He shot her right in the head," she said. "He is supposed to have loved her, wanted her more than anything, and walked up and shot her.”

According to her family, the night Hayden was murdered, her longtime abuser tracked her down at a house on West Ormsby street.

The landlord tried to intervene, but he was shot in the head and died. Seconds later, Hayden was dead.

Fast forward to Wednesday, four days after Hayden’s murder, the suspect on the run fatally shot himself. But the family wanted him in court and held responsible for her death.

“But there is another part of me, I'm so glad it is closed on that part” said Mahoney.

Her family said the suspect had been in Hayden's life for a couple years. The relationship was punctuated by violence. The last attack was so bad, she spent weeks recovering at her mother’s home, who begged her to stay. But something drew her back to her abuser.

“I had brought her here to stay and I didn't want her to go back down there around him and she ended up cussing me out all day and she left and went back and then end up. He killed her,” said Mahoney.

Hayden had a protective order in place, which her abuser violated several times. Her son Zachary said he thinks the police could have done more to protect his mother.

"Had they done their due diligence, and kept him in prison like he should have been, then perhaps this would not have happened," he said.
