LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Jackson County Jail inmate facing child molestation charges died days after he reportedly tried to take his own life while in custody.

Richard Cox was found unresponsive July 25 in his housing area at the jail following an "apparent suicide attempt."

Correctional officers began life-saving measures before emergency medical crews arrived, according to Adam Nicholson, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department.

Cox was then airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital where he died early July 29.

Cox was first arrested July 10 on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia, but was released after appearing in court days later.

Detectives then identified Cox as a suspect of a child molestation investigation. After he was arrested July 22 on a a separate charge of invasion of privacy for allegedly violating a protective order, he was charged with child molestation, sexual misconduct with a minor and child seduction. 

Indiana State Police investigating Cox's death. The department did not respond to a request for comment.
