GALLATIN COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- Gallatin County Sheriff Bud Webster said more than 30 people have been arrested for breaking into Kentucky Speedway, facing charges like trespassing, burglary and criminal mischief.

And not only were they caught in the act, but they then posted the evidence on social media, gaining thousands and, in some cases, millions of views.

"Since the TikTok post, it's been nonstop," Webster said Thursday. "The guys have been arresting people multiple times a week out there."

Webster said this started June 14 and, since the posts, it's escalated. He added none of the people they've caught are locals, and most of them are teenagers.

"The majority of them, the parents have had to come get them and have a discussion with the parents as to why their car got towed or why their kids being held at a sheriff's office," Webster said.

In some of the videos, people say the speedway is abandoned, but that's not true. Although there hasn't been a NASCAR race since July 2020, it still holds driving schools along with other events. Ford Motor Company also parks trucks there while they wait for parts.

"There's still business going on there," Webster said. "It might not be what you think typical racing, but there is business going on there."

Webster said people have stolen items and vandalized parts of the speedway, and he just wants it to stop.

"It's wasting a lot of time and resources," he said Thursday. "We should be out getting bad criminals with drugs and investigating other things instead of silly teenagers just trying to make a dollar off a social media post."

The sheriff's office improved its patrols around the track, and there are now several security cameras in the area.
