LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thieves were caught on camera this week stealing from Louisville mailboxes. The crime has homeowners worried about stolen mail and identity theft.

Thieves have been stealing mail from residential mail boxes in the Glenview Hills neighborhood. Ring Door bell cameras filmed the thefts.

On Dec. 3, around 4 a.m., video shows three people drive up in a car, stop, and run out to nearby mailboxes.

"Mail is becoming less and less secure," said Paul Knopf, who lives in the neighborhood.

Moments later, video shows each of them steal mail, leaving some of it behind.

"I don't know if it's mostly credit card applications and things of that sort, but you know, they're looking for very specific things," Knopf said. "You can tell."

Knopf's neighbor caught the theft on camera.

"It just gets more and more invasive," Knopf said.

About a minute and a half later, they get back into the car to leave when one of the thieves throws some of the mail out of the car and into the street.

"I think they're looking for, probably things they can use for financial gain, whether it be a credit card or this time of the year, I'm sure people put checks in the mail, cash in the mail, things of that sort," Knopf said.

WDRB News spoke with the mailman in the area, who said he is aware of it and stays alert while on his route.

"These people obviously are disregarding the law in any regard, and it's going to take with any criminal behavior," Knopf said. "It's going to take making an example out of someone, catching someone, and holding them accountable."

The United States Postal Inspection Services said it routinely get reports of residential mail theft across Jefferson County.

To avoid personal or financial theft:

  • Sign up for informed delivery through USPS
  • When sending payments or gifts, hand the mail directly to the mail carrier or take them to the post office
  • Other options-- lock your mailbox or get a PO box

People are out of their house on vacations, etc. So it's a time where I think all of us have to look out for our neighbors," Knopf said. "We got to be mindful."

Another tip, you're encouraged to not leave your mail inside of this box overnight.

LMPD also said this is the season where it strongly encourages families to adhere to the 9 p.m. routine. Make sure cars are locked, garage doors are closed, and your mailbox is empty.
