RICHMOND, Ky. (WDRB) — Eastern Kentucky University has issued an all-clear after warning students and staff Wednesday morning about an escaped suspect near campus.
The university initially sent an emergency alert advising people to stay indoors and lock their doors after receiving information about a suspect who had escaped custody near the area.
Officials described the suspect as a shirtless white man wearing black shorts. The suspect was reportedly handcuffed, considered violent and not believed to be armed.
In a follow-up alert, EKU said it had received no reports of the suspect being on campus and believes there is no active threat to the university community.
Authorities later clarified that the suspect had been in the custody of Richmond Police and had not entered the hospital, contrary to initial reports.
Police searched the immediate area around the Eastern Bypass and surrounding neighborhoods but did not locate the suspect. Law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions continue searching.
The suspect has not been found, but university officials said normal campus activities can resume.
