LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — State police have their eyes on a new drug making its way across the Midwest as the state cracks down illegal drugs coming into southern Indiana.
"We're the crossroads of America," Gov. Mike Braun said Wednesday. "Sadly, that means they are going to be using this as a distribution hub."
Indiana State Police has its eye on cychlorphine. It's a drug that's considered 10 times stronger than fentanyl and is making its way across the Midwest.
This comes as Braun said ISP officers recently disrupted major drug pipelines bringing narcotics from Louisville, Cincinnati and Phoenix.
Braun said public safety is top of mind. ISP seized 48 pounds of meth, more than two dozen guns, and 84 traffickers off southern Indiana's streets since January.
The governor said this is only the beginning. He said ISP will continue confronting meth, cocaine, heroin, and drug traffickers who are targeting Hoosiers.
"If you're doing that here in the state, you're going to get figured out," Braun said. "You're going to get prosecuted, and you're going to pay the price."
Meghan Stockdale, executive director of Genesis House, said she's excited about the arrests because it's a chance for people to choose a better path.
"That was the starting point of so many people's recovery,"Â Stockdale said. "Each time that someone is placed in incarceration, it is an opportunity for us to intervene. It is an opportunity for recovery to win."
Genesis House has helped more than 200 Harrison County, Indiana, women on their addiction recovery journey since 2020.
The organization is expanding later in 2026 to house 21 more women in need.
"We just want to continue to see people get a second chance," Stockdale said. "There is hope. We do recover. People can move past the mistakes of their past."
