LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jefferson County Public Schools student was taken to the hospital early Thursday after an accidental shooting.

It happened in the parking lot of Atherton High School, according to a message Principal Dr. Stephanie Fluhr sent to students' families. Fluhr said Louisville Metro Police officers and an ambulance responded after "a student shot themselves in the leg, apparently accidentally, inside their car."

"The gun never entered the building and there were no shots fired inside the school," Fluhr wrote, adding that it should serve as a reminder that guns are not allowed on school property.

The full text of the letter is pasted below:

Dear Atherton Families,

I always try to communicate directly with you when there is an incident that impacts our school and/or your student.

This morning, several police officers and an ambulance responded to Atherton’s student parking lot after a student shot themselves in the leg, apparently accidentally, inside their car. Our staff responded quickly as the student sought help and EMS transported the student to the hospital.

To be clear, the gun never entered the building and there were no shots fired inside the school. Learning continued as usual inside our building though we did relocate a few classes as police investigated the incident. Counselors are available to talk to any students who feel they need support.

I hope you, and all members of our Atherton family, will keep the student in your thoughts. I also hope this serves as a reminder that guns are not allowed on school property and no weapons of any kind are allowed inside our school.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at the school office.

Thank you for your support of Atherton High School.

Dr. Stephanie Fluhr, Principal
