LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville woman accused of trying to kidnap an 8-year-old girl appeared in court Tuesday morning.
Charra Lewis, 42, was arrested Saturday, Aug. 1 after police said she attempted to kidnap the girl and break into her home in the Portland neighborhood. She's charged with attempted kidnapping of a minor and attempted second-degree burglary.
Prosecutors wanted Lewis' bond to be raised from the original $50,000 to $100,000, citing safety concerns and a separate bench warrant issued the day before.
Judge Jennifer Leibson denied the request Tuesday, keeping the bond at $50,000 plus home incarceration.
According to documents, the 8-year-old victim told Louisville Metro Police Department officers she was on the sidewalk across from her house when Lewis approached her and asked if she needed help finding her mother. When the girl ran toward her house, Lewis allegedly chased after her and tried to restrain her.
The victim made it inside her home and locked the door when Lewis grabbed a metal garden pole and beat on the door to get in, the citation said, damaging a window screen.
Lewis claimed to believe the child did not belong to the victim's mother and that she was trying to take her to "save" her.
Lewis' next court hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
