Tristen York in court in Louisville, Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 26-year-old Louisville man who allegedly broke into Pleasure Ridge Park High School with another man and stole a forklift last summer pleaded not guilty to several charges Tuesday.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. on July 25, 2024, according to court documents. That's when Tristen York, 26, and an unnamed co-defendant allegedly located a hidden key that fit a forklift parked outside the high school at 5901 Greenwood Road. Police said York used the key to start the forklift and began driving it toward a public road, with the co-defendant riding on one of the forks.

The forklift hit a speed bump before it reached the road, throwing the co-defendant off of it. York then ran over the co-defendant with the forklift, "causing serious physical injuries." Police said York called 911 to report someone had been hit by a vehicle, but refused to identify himself, and left the scene before first responders arrived.

The co-defendant spent three weeks at UofL Health Hospital, recovering from a fractured pelvis and a collapsed lung.

Police said the forklift is valued at more than $10,000.

Investigators were able to find York by tracking the phone he used to call 911.

York was in Jefferson County court Tuesday morning, where the judge entered not guilty pleas on his behalf for theft by unlawful taking, assault and leaving the scene of an injury accident without rendering aid.

The judge set a $50,000 cash bond for York, and ordered him to have no contact with JCPS schools or the co-defendant. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 30.
