LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man will spend more than 10 years in federal prison for a carjacking at a dealership in Fern Creek.Ā
A judge sentenced Corey Buford, 23, to 10 years and five months in prison for holding a Kearney Moto Sports employee at gunpoint and stealing a BMW in April 2022.
The incident was caught on video. An employee at the car dealership, who spoke with WDRB after Buford's arrest, said he claimed he was interested in purchasing a car, but didn't have a way to get to the lot and requested a ride.Ā
When an employee showed up to get Buford in a different vehicle, he wasn't there.Ā
The next day, Buford showed up at the dealership, and employees showed him the car he asked about the day before. The dealership doesn't allow potential buyers to test drive a vehicle until a valid drivers license is presented and a credit check completed. Employees said Buford was avoiding presenting a license and completing the credit check.Ā
Buford later asked the sales representative who was showing him the vehicle if she could unlock the door because he forgot his lighter. When she did, police said Buford pulled a gun and demanded the keys.
Video appeared to show the suspect point the gun at the woman, take the keys and then cock the gun after she runs away, before he gets in the car.
Buford was arrested later that evening after police said he was seen coming out of a home near Louisville's Smoketown neighborhood. When they took him into custody, they allegedly found a handgun and clothes similar to those used in the robbery.Ā
Court documents showed Buford admitted to the robbery, and officers found the stolen vehicle near his home.
When Buford gets out of prison, he will have five years of supervised release. Attorneys said his sentence includes his conviction for "brandishing a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, a crime that carries a mandatory sentence of 84 months consecutive to the sentenced imposed for the carjacking."
There is no parole in the federal system.
