LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville Metro Corrections officer appeared in court Wednesday, accused of helping a shooting suspect evade police.

According to court documents, 37-year-old Kanita Freeman "knowingly picked up and aided" a man after he shot and robbed another man on Jan. 4, 2025.

Police said they responded to a shooting in the 100 block of E. Southland Boulevard and located a man who had been shot multiple times in the torso and face.

The victim was rushed to UofL Hospital and underwent surgery for his injuries. Police said he is now partially paralyzed and is still recovering from gunshot wounds to several vital organs.

Police interviewed him at the hospital. He told officers he was shot and his phone, keys and $5,000 in cash were stolen from his pockets.

The suspects fled the scene on foot. Police said one of them got into Freeman's car that was seen leaving the area. Court documents said the suspect was seen going inside Freeman's house with "a handgun in the front pocket of his hoodie" after the incident. The suspect later comes out of Freeman's house with different clothes on.

Freeman pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday to charges of facilitating assault and facilitation to robbery. She was placed on home incarceration after a $10,000 bond was partially secured, according to court documents. She is due back in court next Thursday.

A spokesperson for Metro Corrections said Freeman turned herself in Wednesday after a warrant was issued for her arrest. She has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.
