LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A shooting victim who showed up at UofL Health's Mary and Elizabeth Hospital early New Year's Day is expected to survive.

It happened around 12:30 a.m., according to a news release from Louisville Metro Police. Officers with LMPD's Fourth Division were sent after reports that a man with a gunshot wound to the leg checked himself into the hospital.

Medical staff provided first aid before transferring him to UofL Health Hospital downtown with injuries that aren't believed to be life-threatening, according to the release.

Members of LMPD's Non-Fatal Shooting Unit spoke to the victim there. He told investigators he was shot in the 800 block of Denmark Street, which is in the Wyandotte neighborhood.

Later Thursday, 35-year-old Flor Orantes was arrested. According to her arrest citation, two LMPD detectives were the area near Denmark Street when they saw two bullet holes though a fence at 837 Brentwood Ave. They lined up with another bullet hole in a garage at 843 Denmark St., where the victim told police he was shot.

According to police, the detectives then went to speak to Orantes, who lives at that Brentwood Avenue, but she said she knew nothing about it. However, she let the detectives come in the backyard to search for evidence, and while there, they saw four spent shell casings. And surveillance footage from a neighbor showed Orantes in the backyard firing multiple times toward the fence, polic said. She then admitted to firing her sister's gun multiple times in the backyard.

Orantes was then arrested, and, according to her arrest citation, she told police she was drunk on New Year's Eve and fired the gun. The victim was in the garage behind the fence, attending a party, police said.

She's charged with second-degree assault.
