Gavin Perkins

Gavin Perkins, the man accused of killing his mother, 69-year-old Ruth Perkins, appears in court. Gavin Perkins was originally charged with murder, but that charge was dismissed after he was ruled incompetent to stand trial.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 69-year-old woman was shot and killed in her east Louisville apartment Monday afternoon, and police say her son pulled the trigger.

Gavin Perkins, 38, was arraigned on murder and domestic violence charges Tuesday, a day after he was arrested for allegedly killing his mother inside the Worthington Glen Apartments on Southern Meadows Drive.

Police say Perkins shot 69-year-old Ruth Perkins several times in the apartment they shared on April 23. Court documents say he called 911 around noon, but police couldn’t make contact with him.

Several hours later, he went outside and asked a mail carrier to call 911 again.

When LMPD officers arrived, they found Perkins inside the apartment with his dead mother.

According to court documents, Perkins initially invoked his right to remain silent during questioning, but later stated: "everybody has a right to defend themselves."

Friends of the victim say they still have a hard time accepting the shooting happened.

"I’m going between feeling like I am going to throw up to I am going to cry. I am just in shock," said Margie Miller who was a next door neighbor and close friend of Ruth Perkins. Miller met Gavin Perkins several times and he would sometimes come over to borrow items. She tells WDRB Gavin was always "calm and very nice."

Inside the apartment, police say they found firearms, ammunition and magazines.

The judge ordered Perkins to remain jailed at Metro Corrections on a $1 million bond; the public defender's request to lower the bond was denied.
