LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man was arrested for allegedly shooting a woman in the Iroquois neighborhood late Wednesday evening.

Johnny Minton, 35, was arrested early Thursday morning.

Officers responded to a call of a reported shooting just before midnight in the 1300 block of Shingo Avenue, according to LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell. That's where they found a woman who had been shot in the left arm and side.

The woman's injuries weren't considered life-threatening, according to Mitchell. She was taken to UofL Hospital, where LMPD detectives interviewed her.

According to court documents, the woman told detectives she was standing outside when she heard gunfire and realized she had been shot, before going back in the residence.

Detectives then returned to the scene and interviewed Minton after reading him his rights. He gave police conflicting statements, initially telling them he heard gunfire before the victim came into the house and stated she had been shot. He later said the shooting happened in an upstairs bedroom after the victim told Minton that someone had left a gun in the house.

Neither the victim nor Minton are permitted to own firearms because they're both convicted felons.

Minton told police the woman was shot when the gun went off as he tried to clear it while she was sitting next to him, according to the report.

Police searched the home and found the gun and one spent shell casing. Minton was booked into Louisville Metro Corrections early Thursday.

He is charged with assault and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Minton is scheduled to appear in court on April 5.
