LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several Breckinridge County Sheriff's deputies were taken to a hospital early Tuesday after they inhaled an unknown substance that someone sprayed inside the justice center.

Around 10 a.m. central time, Breckinridge County Emergency Management Director Eric Vertrees said a man, who has not yet been identified, walked into the justice center at 111 West 2nd Street in Hardinsburg with a "garden sprayer" bottle concealed under his shirt.

"At the time he entered the building, he had what appeared to be some type of camouflage vest, also had a gas mask, also had a sprayer," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Scotty Sharp, a spokesperson for the Kentucky State Police-Elizabethtown Post.

After being confronted by bailiffs, Sharp said the man sprayed an unknown substance into the air before running from the building.

"He was pursued over past the parking lot, behind the judicial building in an alley, at that time he was arrested," Sharp said.

The man was taken into custody after he was tackled about a block away on Main Street.

The suspect and his possible motive are unknown at this time. Vertrees said the man told officers the substance was water and alcohol, and he later said something about having some form of acid in it.

"It was not a hazardous material," Sharp said. "Right now, preliminarily looks like it was some type of Tabasco sauce, pepper."

Authorities evacuated the justice center and requested assistance from a hazardous materials team from Fort Knox to test the substance to determine its composition and determine whether or not it was a dangerous chemical.

KSP is investigating the incident. The suspect was taken to the hospital, but is facing several charges. None of the officers involved suffered any major injuries, according to police.
