LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man was shot multiple times Wednesday morning near downtown Louisville.

Louisville Metro Police spokesperson John Bradley said officers responded around 10:30 a.m. to Broadway and 9th Street, near the L&N Building, on the report of a person shot. Officers arrived on scene to find a man with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was transported to UofL Hospital and is expected to survive thanks to the help of Jefferson County Public Schools police officer.

Officer Kevin Hayes-Taylor was responding to a call at a nearby school when he saw part of the confrontation that led to the shooting.

9TH STREET SHOOTING JCPS OFFICER

JCPS Police Officer Kevin Hayes-Taylor speaks to WDRB News on May 8, 2024 in Louisville, Ky.

"I was actually on my way to school and I noticed an altercation, somebody needed some help," Hayes-Taylor said.

It wasn't the way Hayes-Taylor expected to start his day.

"I saw the body language of the people that were out here and it seemed a little frantic," Hayes-Taylor said. "So I stopped and I yelled out the window, 'hey does he need help?' And they said yes so I stopped to pull over."

The officer with JCPS rendered aid to the man who had been shot in the leg. All of it was captured on body camera footage.

"I applied a turn to slide tourniquet to try to stop the bleeding and then got some gauze," Hayes-Taylor said.

Hayes-Taylor, who has been with the Kentucky National Guard for 16 years, said his military training kicked in.

"Once I saw somebody that needed help, I just stopped everything I was doing," Hayes-Taylor said. "Called up to dispatch with my radio, let them know where I was, what I saw, and that I needed to get EMS out immediately."
