LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) — A man accused of stabbing another man and his dog to death in Old Louisville earlier this year is now facing new theft charges after police said he refused to return a Jefferson County Public Schools master key.
Charles Gerlach, 55, is charged with theft by unlawful taking after investigators said he failed to return a master key to the Phoenix School of Discovery.
Gerlach previously worked as a security monitor for JCPS.
According to court documents, district officials went to Gerlach's home earlier this month to collect the key. Police said Gerlach gave conflicting statements about where he had put it and never turned it over.
Gerlach pleaded not guilty to the theft charge.
He is already awaiting trial on a murder charge in the death of Randall Moore, who was found inside an apartment on West Ormsby Avenue near South 6th Street around 3:30 p.m. Feb. 26.
Police said officers were first called to the scene after Gerlach allegedly jumped from a fourth-floor apartment window. Inside, investigators reported discovering a man’s body hidden in a closet behind a mattress. A dead dog was also found in the bathroom sink.
According to police, Gerlach later admitted to killing both the man and the dog. He now faces multiple charges, including murder.
Gerlach had been under home incarceration but is now being held in jail.
