LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A New Albany man has now been charged with murder after he shot and killed a man at his home on Saturday, according to police.
Indiana State Police initially said 68-year-old Kevin Campbell shot and killed Christopher Proctor as he approached Campbell's home with a sword. But on Monday, police said the 41-year-old Proctor wasn't carrying a sword and was unarmed.
According to police, Campbell heard a knock on his bedroom window and went to the door with a "small caliber rifle."
ISP Master Trooper Phillip Hensley told WDRB Monday that Campbell intended to scare the person at the door.
"There was a lot of remorse, a lot of, I'm sure, certainly panic," Hensley said. "He wanted to scare him. He wanted this to be a warning shot, and his warning shot wasn't exactly a warning shot."
Campbell told police that Proctor approached with a sword and was shot in the chest outside the home on Slate Run Road.Â
Police said Campbell called New Albany Police Department two hours after the shooting to report a dead man in his yard.
"When New Albany police arrived, they believed they were arriving to a cardiac arrest and a deceased male in the yard, said Hensley. "That’s when Campbell says 'no, no I shot him' and they raised his shirt and there was a bullet hole."
Police said Campbell tried to hide the body in that two-hour timeframe, using a trash can and carpet, but was unsuccessful. Police said he also came up with the story of Proctor attacking him with a sword.
Campbell told police that he had been involved with Proctor for almost a year and that the relationship had not ended well.Â
Campbell has been charged with murder, manslaughter, criminal recklessness with a firearm and obstruction of justice. He is being held in the Floyd County Jail.
Campbell was arraigned on Monday at which time the judge did not set a bond due to the murder charge. Campbell is due in court again on Dec. 5.
