Security cameras in use sign

CRESTWOOD, Ky. (WDRB) -- Business owners in Crestwood are reeling after a string of crime last week that included power meter thefts, stolen security cameras, tools and more.

They say the criminals struck several businesses in the area near La Grange Road around 2 a.m. on May 21.

"It was quite a shock," said Jeff Apple, who works at Falls City Motorsports. "I know a lot of people around here were surprised by it."

Apple arrived at his business later that morning to find that power, phone lines, and everything else were down. Upon inspecting the building, he discovered that the power meter had been stolen.

Falls City Motorsports and Crestwood Bistro both lost power and had their electricity meters stolen. However, criminals did not manage to break into either of these businesses.

The thieves were more successful at nearby Reardon’s Fruit Market, where they took not only the power meter but also security cameras, tools, and other items.

"They came in and took our safe, broke in our storage box, stole our tools, that sort of thing," said Kevin Reardon, owner of Reardon’s Fruit Market.

In total, Reardon estimates his market suffered around $10,000 in losses due to the stolen items.

"It’s possibly just part of the times that we're in. It's frustrating," Reardon said. "You go long periods of time without anybody touching a thing, then all of a sudden, this happens."

The Oldham County Police Department is actively investigating the string of burglaries, but so far no suspects have been identified.

The motive for stealing the electricity meters is not clear, but it is assumed that individuals use them to try to hide electricity usage from utility companies in some way.

"Been around here about 45 years, grew up here locally, Apple said. "So it's not something you see in Crestwood often."

Anyone with information about the break-ins is encouraged to contact the Oldham County Police Department at 502-222-0111.
