LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana couple was arrested for child neglect, Indiana State Police said Tuesday.

ISP started a criminal investigation after receiving information from the Indiana Department of Child Services on Oct. 31. The allegations were in connection to the neglect of a 2-month-old infant with extreme weight loss, according to police.

Police said Pearl Crowder, 22, and Isiah Beavers, 23, had neglected the infant child, who was taken to IU Bedford Emergency Hospital and later taken to Riley Children's Hospital. Crowder and Beavers are from Shoals in Martin County.

According to police, the infant required emergency medical treatment to survive due to being unconscious from severe malnutrition.

Crowder and Beavers were both charged with neglect of a dependent causing catastrophic bodily injury to a minor.Ā
