CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (WDRB) -- A suspect was injured after being shot by police in Charlestown, Indiana, Saturday evening.
Charlestown Police Department responded to a home in the 1000 block of Thompson Street on a welfare check. Police were led to Nine Penny Nature Reserve, just outside of city limits on Tunnel Mill Road, around 5 p.m.
"Officers had concerns for the safety of that individual," Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said.
According to police, when officers arrived on scene they found a man who was in a volatile argument with family members while brandishing a gun.
Charlestown Police Maj. Brion Gilbert shot a 48-year-old Memphis, Indiana man.Ā Wheeles saidĀ it's believed one officer fired at least one shot that struck the suspect.Ā
The man was flown to University of Louisville Hospital after being shot.Ā According to police, no officers were injured but the man was taken to the hospital has what they believe are non-life-threatening injuries.
Gilbert, who has 26 years of law enforcement experience, was placed on routine administrative leave for an undetermined amount of time.
