LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --Â Louisville Metro Police are warning residents about a group of armed and dangerous suspects targeting homes and stealing vehicles in southwest Louisville.
Investigators said the group has been seen in neighborhoods around LMPD's Third Division working together, often in the early morning hours, to steal cars.
For reference, the Third Division covers:
- Auburndale
- Fairdale
- Iroquois
- Iroquois Park
- Kenwood Hill
- PRP
- Southland Park
- Southside
- Yorktown
- Valley Station
In at least one instance, on Maravian Drive, the suspects exchanged gunfire with a homeowner who confronted them.
"They have zero regard for human life whatsoever," said LMPD Sgt. Joe Keeling. "They will not hesitate to shoot at you."
Keeling said the suspects have been caught on video in several neighborhoods, and that their tactics make them especially threatening. They typically break windows, push cars out of driveways to reduce noise, and leave one person standing watch with a gun pointed at the house in case someone intervenes.
Police advise calling 911 and keeping your distance in those instances.
"We don't need anybody trying to be a hero right now, going out and stopping these guys," Keeling said. "They need to call 911, let the police get there, get in the area, and try to stop these individuals."
The crimes have left some Louisville residents frustrated.
"Luckily, I’ve never had my car stolen, but it’s like, that screws with your life. It takes you time to get places, to run errands, to get to work, so there’s no excuse for that kind of thing," said Louisville resident Brendan Auman.
Police continue to urge people to keep their cars locked, remove valuables, and stay aware.
Investigators believe multiple groups are responsible for car thefts citywide, not just in the southwest division.
“There's multiple crews out there doing it," he said. "It just seems that this crew has particular MO where they seem to be a lot more dangerous and a lot more equipped to challenge someone that tries to challenge or stop them."
