LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A mother was killed in a home invasion in Shelby County on Saturday.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office initially said officers responded to the 8000 block of Bagdad Road "for an unknown emergency."

On Sunday, Shelby County Coroner Jeff Ivers told WDRB that a home invasion turned into a murder-suicide. Jessica Hager, 40, was shot and killed by a man who used to date her sister-in-law.

Michael Rahmlow, 42, a Franklin County resident, broke into the home, killed her and then took his own life.

Ivers said the shooting happened after an argument that occurred earlier in the day. He also said Hager's husband was able to escape the house. Neighbors told WDRB that Hager's husband ran across the street, banged on the door and asked for help.

Hager was a nurse.

"We knew the people, and she was really nice," said neighbor Dallas Kelly. "It's a shame, they were good people."

Kelly stayed wide awake on Oct. 5. He said there were 11 police cars near the corner of Cedarmore Road and Bagdad Road.

"We stayed over there in the window and watched," Kelly said. "They were here all night. There were police cars here all night."

Hager was getting ready to celebrate her 41st birthday at the end of the month.

"She was a fantastic person," Kelly said.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is investigating what led up to the incident.
