LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A local nonprofit will launch a new program aimed at giving people more healthy food.
Dare to Care is partnering with the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation for the prescription pantry program, which is part of Feeding America's Food as Medicine initiative.
The partnership will connect people to food and nutrition as part of their overall health care. Patients are screened for food insecurity during medical visits and, if necessary, are given access to healthy groceries.
The goal is to help eliminate barriers and food insecurity.
"When a patient comes into a clinical setting, they are asked two food insecurity questions, and pretty much those are if food ran out during the month, and if they did answer positive to the question, they get access to the pantry," said Jackie Richardson, director of programs and services.
The program started three years ago and has shown success, including a 7% reduction in food insecurity among participants.
