LEXINGTON, Ind. (WDRB) -- Two students were hospitalized as a precaution Friday after coming into contact with an "illegal substance" on the floor of an elementary school classroom in Scott County, the district superintendent said.

Marc Slaton, superintendent of Scott County School District 2, said in a written statement Monday that the substance is "presumed to be meth." According to law enforcement, it will be sent to a lab for confirmation, he said.

Slaton said the two students were released from the hospital later that day, and law enforcement officials searched Lexington Elementary School with a K-9 unit.

"I mean, what can you say?" said Robert Cartwright, who lives in the community. "This is only an elementary school, and that's not the kind of thing that needs to be around anybody."

No other substances were found, Slaton said.

"The Lexington Elementary School staff, our School Resource Officer, and other first responders did a great job with a very difficult situation," Slaton said.

Jerry Howard, who lives right across the street from the school, said the situation is "definitely" a concern. He said he first heard about it Friday afternoon when picking his granddaughter up from school.

"People were asking me what I thought," he said.

Howard and Cartwright both said Lexington is typically a peaceful, quiet, small town.

"Whoever they trace it back to, it's no telling where they found it," Cartwright said. "Or somebody might have picked it up and just carried it in and thought it was something. ... no telling what it might be or not be."

Slaton said this is still an active investigation from the Scott County Sheriff's Department.

"A safe learning environment is a top priority and we will continue to work with our local law enforcement partners to seek answers to the questions that still remain," Slaton said in the statement.

Scott County Sheriff Jerry Goodin wasn't available Monday for an interview.
