LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The new principal at The Academy @ Shawnee startled some parents Thursday night by saying as of now the school doesn't have enough staff to open this fall.
The remark came from principal Hollie Smith at a community meeting in the Shawnee neighborhood.
According to the JCPS website, there are 30 open positions at the Academy @ Shawnee, which is more than any other school in the district.
Thursday, a JCPS spokesperson released a statement trying to calm concern by saying the Academy @ Shawnee "will open on the first day like every other school."
The full statement from JCPS can be read below:
"The Academy @ Shawnee will open on the first day of the 24-25 school year, just like every other JCPS school. School districts nationwide are navigating the teacher shortage and we are no different. JCPS remains busy recruiting qualified teachers who are passionate about doing what’s best for kids."
