LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville school is motivating more girls to pursue a career in aviation.
The Academy @ Shawnee hosted its third annual Girls in Aviation Day for middle school students and 9th graders on Friday.
Workers from UPS, the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, along with airline and aviation employees, were on hand to talk with the students interested in a career in the aviation industry.
Officials said the industry is primarily a male-dominated field, with women accounting for less than 20% of most aviation jobs like pilots, aerospace engineers and air traffic controllers.
That's why Shawnee hosts the Girls in Aviation events to emphasize that the sky's the limit when it comes to what women can do.
"It's exciting, because they're happy and they're learning the new things," Rachelle Wood, a coach at Shawnee, said. "They're having hands-on experiences, and they seem excited about it."
Wood said the school has already started to see an increase in the number of female students joining the aviation pathway program.
