SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (WDRB) -- An annual summer camp in southern Indiana gives kids a chance to get a full grasp on every aspect of emergency services.
The Scottsburg Fire Camp was prompted by the need for volunteer firefighters.
The hope is that the camp will spark interest early, and kids will grow up and join the department as adults.
Kids ages 8-15 are taught fire prevention and safety skills during the camp. They also train on fire extinguishers, learn hose advancement, and fire attack on a safe level for the children.
"It's been very, very rewarding, from us at a firefighter standpoint, to be able to see these children and their parents come back and say 'Wow, my kid learned a lot of stuff that I never would have even known as an adult,'" James Richey, Scottsburg Fire chief, said.
This was the fifth year the Scottsburg Fire Department hosted the camp.
