LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Ducks were afloat in Spencer County to support a cause that honors a teen's legacy.
The inaugural Duck Dash at the Dam was held on Sunday. People could adopt rubber ducks for different amounts of money to compete in a race down Taylorsville Lake for a chance to win a $1,000 prize.
The event was held in honor of 18-year-old Nathan Lane Wimsatt, who died in a car crash on April 29th, 2023. He passed away just three weeks before his graduation from Spencer County High School. Wimsatt was an avid car enthusiast and his family wanted to make that part of today's event.
"This is something near and dear to our hearts," said Kathryn Wimsatt, Nathan's mother. "Releasing ducks into the tailwater of Taylorsville Lake carries over his love for cars, trucks and jeeps. Jeeps in particular as he owned and restored a 1989 Jeep Comanche. We often duck jeeps in his memory as well."
Proceeds from today's Duck Dash went directly to the Nathan Lane Wimsatt Scholarship Fund, which helps ease the burden of college or trade school costs for students. The Nathan Lane Wimsatt Scholarship Fund has already awarded $20,000 in scholarships to seniors at Spencer County High School over the past two years and today's event raised $7,200.Â
"Our family, friends and community have rallied around us since the day Nathan went to heaven and it makes our hearts happy that we are giving back while still honoring our son," Nathan's mother said.
The winners of the 2024 Duck Dash were Chris and Molly Hiser. They decided to donate the prize money back to the scholarship fund.
